How to Write Handoff Notes Between AI Coding Sessions: A Checklist

A short handoff can save you from repeating a broken prompt or undoing a deliberate choice. Check these items before you close your coding tool.

You close Cursor after fixing a stubborn form bug. A few days later, you open a new session and cannot remember whether the validation belongs in the form, the server, or both. Learning how to write handoff notes between AI coding sessions helps you carry the tested state of the project forward without copying an entire chat transcript.

Make the note at the end of a session, while the result is still in front of you. It should be short enough to read before your next prompt and specific enough to keep you from repeating the same investigation. Check off the items below as you write.

Capture what is true before you leave

Start with the app as it actually behaves, including what you have and have not tested. This prevents a promising screenshot from turning into an unsupported claim that a feature is finished.

  • Name the working behavior. Write what you did and saw, such as “Submitting a valid request shows it in the request list.”
  • Mark the test boundary. State what remains untested, such as a refresh, a second account, or a failed network request.
  • Record the known failure. Include the shortest steps that reproduce it and the result you expected.
  • Identify the affected area. Note the screen, flow, or files you changed so you know where to look first.

Do not mark a database-backed feature complete just because its interface looks correct. If you have not checked whether a write persists, say so. The note is useful because it distinguishes evidence from intention.

Preserve decisions and useful prompts

A fresh AI session can propose a plausible change that reverses yesterday's choice. Give the next session the reason behind important constraints, especially where several implementations could appear reasonable.

  • State one decision and its reason. For example, “Keep status changes manual until approval rules are defined.”
  • Flag a rejected approach. Say why you stopped using it, rather than leaving the tool to rediscover the same dead end.
  • Save a prompt worth reusing. Keep the task, the prompt, and what it achieved together. A prompt without its result is hard to judge later.
  • Note a review risk. Call out an auth flow, database write, secret, or destructive action that needs closer inspection before deployment.

Keep these entries selective. A running account of every prompt makes the handoff harder to scan. Preserve the choices and results that would change what you ask the tool to do next.

Set up the first move of the next session

The last part of a handoff should make restarting easy. Give yourself one action small enough to attempt before reconsidering the whole roadmap.

  • Write the next test or change. “Check whether a non-owner can edit a request” is clearer than “finish permissions.”
  • Name the context to share. Identify the decision or constraint the next AI session needs, rather than pasting the full previous conversation.
  • Separate later ideas. Keep a possible feature out of the immediate task until you decide to build it.

A compact handoff for the form bug might read: “Valid submissions appear in the list. Empty titles show an error, but persistence after refresh is untested. Validation runs in the form and must also be checked before saving. Next, test refresh and review the server-side write.” You can paste that into a new session, verify it against the project, and ask for one focused change.

Leave a note you will trust

Read your handoff once before closing the tool. Remove claims you did not verify and make the next action concrete. When you return, run the app before trusting either the note or the AI tool's description of the code.
